NuLab’s identity card scheme will cost £5.4 billion to set up and operate over the next ten years according to the Home Office. Opposition parties claim that the cost is more likely to be £20 billion. The scheme will force every adult to pay for a ‘biometric’ card which stores fingerprint and iris scan information. The Third Way is vehemently opposed to the scheme alongside many others concerned at a further erosion of our civil liberties and unconvinced by spin regarding terrorism and crime reduction.
