Leaders of the three big workers’s groups planning a super-union of 2.3 million members are urging their members to vote for the plan. The general secretaries of Amicus, the Transport and General and GMB want one big union. It would have 600,000 members in manufacturing; 500,000 in the public services; 250,000 in transport; 200,000 in food and hospitality and 100,000 in emergency and other sectors. Its consolidated strength will make it easier for industrial action ballots to be conducted and supported because only one set of workers will be involved. The proposed union will be nearly twice the size of Unison, the present largest union, which has 1.3 million members.
