Those who heard George Bush attacking ‘brutal regimes’ at the UN must have wondered what right he thought he had to lecture anyone on the subject. He said:-
“In Blearus, North Korea, Syria and Iran, brutal regimes deny their people the fundamental rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of the United Nations.”
Yet the US has a long history of contempt for Human Rights, backing dictatorships and presiding most recently over the notorious prison camp Guantanamo. Doubtless there are human rights abuses in the countries he mentioned but Bush has long since surrendered the moral high ground.
